ESTA is the abbreviation for “Electronic System for Travel Authorization”, which means electronic travel authorization system. ESTA is an on-line Travel Authorization application system developed by the United States Government in order to be able to pre-check travellers before granting them the right to enter the United States. Due to a strengthening of security measures that came into force on January 12, 2009, persons travelling under the visa Waiver program must apply for a travel authorization before they leave for the United States. In addition, all travelers must be in possession of a machine-readable passport so that they can be admitted to the United States. The ESTA travel authorisation application process is carried out online and managed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
