Introduction

An AVE authorization gives travellers the opportunity to travel to Canada easily, compared to the steps required to obtain a visa. However, some rules still apply if you want your AVE to remain valid. Some of them are pretty obvious, but you might want to ignore some of them. Be aware of what you can and cannot do in Canada as an AVE holder for Canada.

Rules that may influence your ability to travel or stay in Canada

Work. An AVE for Canada does not allow you to work and receive remuneration from a Canadian source. If you breach this rule, Canadian authorities will expel you from Canada and your AVE status will be revoked. If you want to work in Canada and receive remuneration from a Canadian source, you will need to apply for a work visa.

Studies. If you want to study in Canada, you will need to get a study visa. The AVE does not allow you to take courses at the university. Institutions would not even allow you to register if you do not have the supporting documentation required to enter Canada as a full-time student.

Importation of fresh fruit. You can take a lot of different items when you go to Canada as an AVE, but the fresh fruit is not part of it. If you arrive at the Canadian border with fresh fruit, you will be asked to discard them before you can enter the territory.

Stay for more than six months. An AVE only allows you to stay on Canadian soil for periods of up to six months. If you exceed the time allowed by your AVE, you may not immediately suffer the consequences, if the immigration officer at the border does not check the stamp on your passport. However, if you are trying to return to Canada, border security will notice that you have previously exceeded the stay limits. You will not be allowed to enter the country, and your AVE shall be revoked. However, you can ask for an extension of the visit date when you are in Canada.

Canadian laws that travellers need to know

Using the phone at the wheel. Many tourists who visit Canada are unaware that the law on the prohibition of the use of the telephone at the wheel is strictly enforced. You can use your phone in hands-free mode, but you cannot have your mobile or GPS in hand when driving. If you receive a ticket in Canada, you have to pay for it or you have to bear some of the consequences. At best, you will not be able to rent a car in Canada, and at worst you will have to pay a hefty fine and have a withdrawal of points on your licence issued by your home country.

Health benefits. Canada has a socialized health care system reserved for Canadian citizens. You cannot enter a health facility to receive care, even if you are the legitimate holder of an AVE. To avoid finding yourself in trouble in an emergency, we recommend that you take out international health coverage before you arrive in Canada.

Conclusion

Your entry on Canadian soil is subject to conditions, and depends on your compliance with the applicable rules. If you do not follow these rules, you may find yourself in trouble and risk being expelled or even criminally charged. Depending on the offence you are the author of, you may jeopardize your right to visit Canada in the future. Be aware of what you can or cannot do under your AVE, and respect the limits that the Canadian government imposes on you.
